Children living in low-income urban areas appear especially prone to developing asthma, possibly related to infections they acquire early in life. In a new study in The Journal of Infectious Diseases, available online, researchers from the University of Wisconsin in Madison investigated viral respiratory illnesses and their possible role in the development of asthma in urban versus suburban babies. The differences in viral illness patterns they found provide insights that could help guide the development of new asthma treatments in children.

Viral respiratory illnesses have been linked previously to the development of asthma in childhood. Early studies investigated the association of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and the onset of asthma. More recent studies have shown that children with human rhinovirus (HRV) infections have a greater chance of developing asthma by age 6 than children with RSV infections. Additionally, it has been suggested that particular virus strains may be more likely than others to promote asthma development. Because children living in urban inner cities have different environmental exposures than children in suburban areas, the authors of this latest study hypothesized that the types of viral respiratory infections would also be unique to each environment.

To document patterns of respiratory viruses in infants living in urban and suburban locations, James E. Gern, MD, and his team of investigators collected nasal secretions from 500 infants from four inner-city areas in the U.S. (Boston, Baltimore, New York City, and St. Louis) and 285 infants from suburban Madison, Wis. Nasal secretions were sampled during periods when the babies had respiratory illnesses and when they were healthy.

The inner-city infants had lower rates of viral detection overall. This may suggest that other factors, such as bacteria or allergic reactions to pollutions or toxic exposures, contribute significantly to respiratory illness. Sick urban infants had lower rates of two kinds of viruses, HRV and RSV, and higher rates of adenovirus infections, compared to suburban infants. In the urban babies, 4.8 percent of nasal washes tested positive for only adenovirus, while just 0.7 percent of samples from suburban babies were positive for only adenovirus. "Adenovirus infections, either as a single pathogen or when detected in concert with other viruses, were significantly more common in the urban population, and this held true for each of the four urban locations where our study was conducted," the authors wrote.

This is of particular interest, the researchers noted, because adenovirus can cause persistent infections. The study authors believe this may suggest that development of the lungs or airways could be altered by adenovirus infections in early life.

In an accompanying editorial, Peter W. Heymann, MD, and Thomas A.E. Platts-Mills, MD, PhD, of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, noted that the findings are of interest given the pervasiveness and the morbidity and mortality of asthma in poor urban areas. "The results clearly show differences in the detection of viral infections during the first year of life," they wrote, "and this approach is likely to provide novel insights that will serve to guide the development of treatment interventions to decrease the prevalence and severity of asthma during childhood."

In an effort to better understand the origins of non-viral respiratory illnesses, Dr. Gern and colleagues are planning experiments to evaluate other pathogens and microbes in the airways. They also plan to follow the urban children in this study for at least 10 years to "test the hypothesis that infections with adenoviruses might be associated later on in childhood with an increased rate of asthma and perhaps lower levels of lung function."

Or, could this be another scheme to make billions of dollars at the expense of the middle class by manipulating the market, much like what happened in 2008?

Although answers to these questions are not easy, it's clear we cannot afford to maintain the status quo. One way or another we need to get into the action, but this time, with total discernment. We must be careful not to repeat the past mistakes by getting caught up in the Euphoria.

I've been following up on both sides and notice they both make sense in their own ways. So, what's the best thing to do? Well, I wish I had a crystal ball to give you a definitive answer, but short of that, I can tell you with relative certainty that things are not as good as they appear to be or as bad as some would claim. I'm somewhere in the middle.

I say we should buy 2-4 units for buy and hold with positive cash flow now. In fact, whatever gives us positive cash flow is a good bet.

We could even buy condos in decent areas that well exceed the 1% Rule. We need to avoid heavy rehabs or more expensive fix & flips and we should stay as close to the major metro areas as possible.

The key is buying with our eyes on the long term but staying alert to sell at a profit if the situation changes. We cannot get speculative no matter how good the deal may look. Focus on cash flow. Will you be able to hold onto your investment if the market suddenly took a 180 degree turn? This might be a real possibility, given the election year stats are usually distorted.

Condos are also good. They may not appreciate as much as SFRs but they sure could give you a much better cash flow and easier to acquire. As you recall, the big boys are mostly after the SFRs, which means there is less competition for 2-4 units and condos, but the profit potential is still attractive.

So, go for it! Do something, but do it with prudence. It's very unlikely you would lose money when you invest in this market in Socal. But, you are losing your money every day it sits in the bank.

Legislation sponsored by Senators Tom Kean, Jr. (R-Union) and Robert W. Singer (R- Ocean) designed to help high school students better understand the financial obligations they are incurring when taking out student loans to finance their post-secondary education has been approved by the Senate Higher Education Committee.

The bill, S- 2150, requires the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority (HESAA) to develop a document containing student loan repayment information on state, federal and private student loans, and mandates that document be disseminated by school districts and nonpublic high schools to students.

Kean said that student loan debt presents challenges to new graduates that they may or may not have foreseen when choosing what institution to attend or degree to pursue.

?Americans citizens are now in greater debt for student loans than they are their cars or credit cards,? said Kean. ?It is straining our economy and severely crippling the financial stability of graduates just starting out in life during an economic downturn. Just as important for young people as having access to education financing is having access to information that spells out explicitly what the loans mean for their personal finances after graduation. Young people and their parents need to make smart choices about their education based in part on how the debt they will incur helps their job prospects and earning potential after graduation.?

Singer said that for most high school graduates, student loans are the first major financial transaction they will make in their lives.

?Student loans are being taken out by young people who likely have never incurred a major financial obligation in their lives and have limited financial literacy,? said Singer, who sits on the board of Georgian Court University in Lakewood. ?They need to have a grasp of what loan repayment will mean for them prior to deciding where they go to school, what they will study, and how much money they will borrow. We cannot just expect that a teenager is going to grasp what it means to finance an education costing tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars without illustrating it for them.?

CHENGDU, China (AP) ? The sentencing of a former police chief who exposed a murder by a Chinese politician's wife is the latest sign that after months of divisive infighting, China's leadership is tying off a seamy political scandal to move ahead with a generational handover of power.

Wang Lijun is expected to be given a lenient sentence by the Intermediate People's Court in the central city of Chengdu on Monday. At his trial last week, Wang confessed to defecting, abusing his power and the other charges against him. The crimes are generally punishable by up to 10 years in prison with a 20-year maximum, though harsher sentences are possible.

Three times during his trial prosecutors said Wang deserved leniency for cooperating in uncovering the central element in the scandal ? the murder of a British businessman by the wife of Wang's former boss, once political high-flier Bo Xilai.

The scandal has been the messiest, most public one Communist Party leaders have had to confront in decades, triggering bruising internal jostling as the leadership prepares to transfer power to a younger generation. In the scandal's wake, Bo was removed from the leadership, his wife confessed to the murder, and relations among the leaders were strained. As a result, arrangements for a party congress to install the new leadership this fall were complicated.

After Wang's sentencing, the leadership is expected to announce long overdue dates for the congress and dispose of the scandal's stickiest issue ? whether merely to expel Bo from the party or hand him over for criminal prosecution. Pronouncing judgment on Bo will allow the new leaders to take charge without the scandal's overhang.

Wang's trial and conviction mark the spectacular downfall of a publicity-grabbing police official who rose to nationwide fame by leading a high-profile but law-bending crusade against organized crime in the inland city of Chongqing until he was cast out by Bo, the city's party chief. According to an official account of his trial, Wang had grown close to Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, and after she confessed to murdering Briton Neil Heywood, Wang covered it up until his estrangement from her, and later Bo, drove him to flee to the U.S. Consulate in Chengdu, fearing for his life.

"When mafia members break up with their bosses, they can attempt to seek police protection. But in Chongqing and for the former police boss, there was nowhere to turn," prominent editor Hu Shuli wrote in a commentary posted on the website of her magazine, Caixin. "And this perhaps encapsulates one of the greatest embarrassments of the country's current legal system."

The official account of Wang's trial, carried by the government-run Xinhua News Agency, portrays Wang as unbound by the law. It says that he ordered surveillance of people without authorization and took bribes from businessmen connected to Bo in exchange for releasing suspects from police detention.

While he first told Gu he would hide evidence and cover up her crime last November, the account said he secretly recorded her confession to poisoning Heywood, a business associate whom she said had threatened her son's safety in a dispute over money.

After his falling out with Gu and Bo, Wang ordered subordinates to gather up the evidence and in February fled to the U.S. Consulate, where he applied for political asylum, though he later surrendered to Chinese authorities. Gu was convicted of the murder last month and given a suspended death sentence.

Xinhua has portrayed Wang as being contrite. "I acknowledge and confess the guilt accused by the prosecuting body and show my repentance," Wang was quoted as saying in court last week. "For the Party organizations, people and relatives that have cared for me, I want to say here, sincerely: I'm very, very sorry, I've let you down."

As for Bo, who was dismissed as party boss of Chongqing in March and stripped of his position among the Communist Party elite, last week was the first time the authorities implicated him in a crime. Though the account does not name him, it says Wang told the city's top party official about Gu's role in Heywood's murder, only to be slapped for it. The implicit reference suggests authorities are preparing to prosecute him on criminal charges, removing for good a politician whose populist style grated on his fellow leaders.

Ding Xueliang, a China expert at Hong Kong's University of Science and Technology, said those in the party leadership who wanted Bo out might push to reward Wang for exposing the corrupt and lawless inner workings of Bo's administration.

"Despite the many terrible things that Wang Lijun did before, he, in my view, contributed enormously to the legitimacy of the Communist government," Ding said. "This kind of local emperor style of Bo Xilai, it is a cancer of the system, and Wang Lijun helped the top leadership to deal with the fundamental disease before it's too late."

Liberty Media had filed an application with the FCC to take over Sirius XM in August. Shares of SIRI have been trading above $2.50 since last Thursday and made a new high of $2.64 on Aug 20, 2012. The stock has rise over 39% so far this year.

Romney pulls in big bucks in southern California

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Having declared that his presidential campaign does not need a makeover, Republican Mitt Romney raised millions of dollars at two fundraisers in southern California on Saturday to help bankroll the final weeks of the race.

"I'm not even going to be able to go home today. We're just coming to town to see you and keep the campaign going," Romney told a well-heeled crowd at the Grand Del Mar Resort hotel in Del Mar, California, about 12 miles from his beachfront house in La Jolla.

Some 650 supporters - including diet guru Jenny Craig - paid from $1,000 to $25,000 a head to hear Romney's 40-minute speech in Del Mar, have their photograph taken with the candidate and eat roast chicken breast served on a bed of Israeli couscous.

Spencer Zwick, the campaign's national finance chairman, assured donors their money would be spent wisely: to build a "massive ground game across the country in those swing states" and buy more television advertising.

The second Saturday event, at the Beverly Hilton, pulled in $6 million, Romney said at the start of his remarks.

About 1,500 tickets were sold at three tiers: $1,000, $15,000 and $50,000. Guests were entertained by comedian Dennis Miller and songwriter/producer David Foster.

With his standing in the polls slipping, Romney has been under fire from some in his party who feel he has not spent enough time visiting political swing states versus hob-nobbing with wealthy donors.

President Barack Obama spent the day campaigning - and also raising funds - in Wisconsin, a battleground state and the home of Romney's running mate, Representative Paul Ryan.

Romney had no public events on Saturday. He will fly to Denver on Sunday afternoon for a rally and among other stops will have a two-day bus tour in Ohio Tuesday and Wednesday.

Local resident Matt Romney, the second of the candidate's five sons, introduced his father and urged attendees to "open their wallets" at least one more time to help get the Republican's message out before November 6.

"It's our turn, you guys" said the elder Romney, 65, who was wearing dress pants and a sport jacket.

'DOESN'T NEED A TURNAROUND'

Boarding a plane in San Francisco on Saturday, Romney declined to answer a reporter's shouted question of whether he will soon adopt a more "aggressive" strategy.

But he told the crowd in Del Mar Saturday's event was his "last fundraiser in San Diego."

In an interview to be broadcast on Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes," Romney rejected calls for changes, pointing out that in national polls he is in a tight race with Obama.

"It doesn't need a turnaround. We've got a campaign which is tied with an incumbent president to the United States," Romney said in excerpts from the interview released by CBS on Friday.

At the Del Mar event, Romney lauded some local California entrepreneurs, including Ada Regan, owner of "Strawberry Hill," an historic mansion in Hillsborough, near San Francisco, where Romney raised funds on Friday night.

Regan's late husband Barrie, an electrical engineer and Italian immigrant, designed components that were used in the U.S. space program.

Pressing a familiar theme, Romney said Obama does not understand what it takes to build a business but rather wants government to play a larger top-down role.

"They DID build their business," Romney said of the Regans.

In Los Angeles Romney criticized Obama's support for certain union measures and said the key to improving education in the United States was "to put the kids and the parents and the teachers first, and the unions and their interests behind."

Downloadable Tweets coming soon says Twitter CEO

Twitter will soon offer downloadable Tweets, according to the company's CEO, Dick Costolo, who announced the feature would be arriving before the end of the year.

Users have apparently wanted the feature for some time now as it allows for easier lookup and referencing than using the standard Twitter interface.

For a while now a number of tools have been available from third-parties to do this but soon Twitter will be offering an official, and one would hope, easier alternative.

Costolo first mentioned the feature to the New York Times back in July but, reports The Verge, this latest confirmation came while he was speaking at a conference for the Online News Association.

Also mentioned was a new tool that will let third-parties aggregate and publish Tweets as a group, potentially offering users an even more tailored Twitter feed.

Costolo also defended the company's recent API changes which have imposed much stricter limits on what third-party Twitter clients can do with the service, further closing up what was once considered a very open platform. Costolo's defence was that Twitter realised it was basically being used to make money for other company's without seeing anything in return.

India government regains its muscle with reforms

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Manmohan Singh's coalition has splintered and his government is fighting for survival. But the Indian prime minister, who has been criticized for presiding meekly over a corrupt government, is suddenly being hailed as a bold, powerful leader.

Since pushing through a battery of unexpected economic reforms last week, and refusing to back down in the face of protests and political threats, Singh appeared to have rejuvenated a government thought hopelessly paralyzed.

"We have been faulted in the last few months of not being adequately a doing government. Now the time has come that we are doing something, and we hope that everybody who cares for this country and the new generation will join in," Law Minister Salman Khurshid said Friday.

A day after a national strike by opponents of his economic program, Singh got a political breather Friday when a regional party opposed to the reforms said it would continue to support the government from outside the coalition. Singh prepared to address the country Friday night to explain his actions.

The turnaround for the soft spoken 79-year-old economist has been shocking.

"He made up his mind that he's going to push through his economic reforms agenda, even if it means he was going to lose power," said Dileep Padgaonkar, a veteran journalist and political analyst.

Padgaonkar said Singh was looking to rescue his legacy and reclaim the glow of his most famous achievement two decades ago when as finance minister he led wholesale reforms widely credited with sparking India's economic rise.

In the past few years, his government was battered by scandals, including the irregular sales of cellphone spectrum and coal blocks that India's auditor said cost the country billions. The opposition protested by paralyzing Parliament, making it impossible for the government to pass many bills. Bureaucrats, fearing they would get caught up in the next scandal, stopped making decisions, freezing business.

The Trinamool Congress, an important coalition partner, regularly blocked decisions. Its leader, Mamata Banerjee, torpedoed an about-to-be-signed water treaty with Bangladesh and fired the national railway minister, who was from her party, when he presented a budget including the first fare increases in nearly a decade.

A low point came last year when the government decided to allow foreign retail chains to come into the country ? and then suspended the decision two weeks later after Banerjee protested.

Meanwhile, India's economy, which officials had recently hoped would hit double-digit growth, was sputtering. The rupee had plunged in value and the country's huge deficit was putting it under threat of a possible ratings downgrade.

Last week, Singh's government responded. It cut the subsidy on diesel fuel by 5 rupees (10 cents) a liter and placed limits on cooking gas subsidies. It agreed to let in foreign retailers, loosened rules on foreign investment in airlines and TV and agreed to sell off stakes in four state owned companies.

The Indian Express newspaper said in an editorial the reforms were not likely to have much immediate impact, but "they are a crucial statement of intent."

The moves sparked outrage from opponents who fear Indian jobs will be lost if large U.S. and European retailers enter the market.

"(Singh) is out to destroy the interests of small traders and farmers," said Sitaram Yechuri, a lawmaker from the communist party.

Jai Prakash, a student at a protest rally in New Delhi, said the economic package showed "politicians are not bothered about the welfare of millions of poor people."

Banerjee demanded an immediate rollback or she would pull out of the coalition. The government ignored the threat, setting the decisions into law Thursday.

Singh's new reforms have been compared with his support for a U.S.-Indian nuclear deal that ended the country's nuclear isolation but nearly brought down his government near the end of his first term in 2008.

That doesn't look likely, at least for now. Though Singh will preside over a minority government without Trinamool, he maintains the support of two parties outside the coalition.

And it is likely that without the mercurial Banerjee the government might go further, possibly opening up the insurance sector to more outside investment and reducing sugar subsidies for the poor. At the same time, the government has sought to lighten the burden on the poor with a tax cut for cooking gas, and media reports said it planned to release 10 million tons of stored grain into the market to bring down food prices.

Zoya Hasan, a political analyst with New Delhi's Jawarhalal Nehru University, said she might not agree with what Singh has done, but he has made himself into India's most influential prime minister since its founding leader, Nehru.

"(He) has brought about a huge change," she said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Space shuttle Endeavour took off Friday morning on a sightseeing tour of California, the last aerial hurrah before retiring to a Los Angeles museum.

Hitching a ride on top of a jumbo jet, the pair departed Edwards Air Force Base, 100 miles north of Los Angeles, circling the high desert that gave birth to the shuttle fleet and headed north toward Sacramento.

Thousands of spectators jammed rooftop buildings and streets around the state Capitol for a glimpse as Endeavour soared overhead. School children squealed as the shuttle looped around a second time.

Endeavour was headed for San Francisco Bay area and several Los Angeles-area landmarks including the Santa Monica Pier, Hollywood Sign and Disneyland.

At the Griffith Observatory, overlooking the Hollywood Sign, throngs of people ? many dressed in shorts and flip-flops with kids in tow ? camped out on beach chairs and blankets on the lush lawns, waiting for a flyover later in Endeavor's journey.

The nearly 5-hour flyover will culminate with an afternoon landing at the Los Angeles International Airport for an arrival ceremony ? then, in a few weeks, a slow-speed journey across town through neighborhoods to its final museum home.

Since Endeavour will buzz by some of the Golden State's most iconic sights, law enforcement and transportation authorities warned motorists not to "gawk and drive."

"We want people to take in this majestic show," Los Angeles police Cmdr. Scott Kroeber said earlier this week. "But if you're driving, please drive and don't try to take in the show simultaneously."

Extra officers will be on duty along the freeways near the airport to make sure traffic flows smoothly as the shuttle zooms overhead.

Endeavour returned to its birthplace Thursday after an emotional cross-country ferry flight that made a special flyover of Tucson, Ariz., to honor its last commander, Mark Kelly, and his wife, former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Giffords, who is recovering from a gunshot wound to the head, was "hooting and hollering" as Endeavour looped around her hometown, according to her former aide C.J. Karamargin.

NASA's shuttle fleet, which retired last year after three decades of flight, was assembled in Palmdale near Edwards Air Force Base. The military outpost 100 miles north of Los Angeles served as the original shuttle landing strip and remained a backup site in case of stormy weather at Cape Canaveral, Fla.

"We're so excited to be welcoming Endeavour home in grand style with these flyovers," Jeffrey Rudolph, president of the California Science Center, said earlier this week.

The youngest shuttle, Endeavour replaced Challenger, which blew up during liftoff in 1986. NASA lost another shuttle, Columbia, in 2003 when it disintegrated during re-entry. Fourteen astronauts were killed.

During 25 missions, Endeavour spent 299 days in space and orbited Earth nearly 4,700 times, racking up 123 million miles.

On its maiden flight in 1992, a trio of spacewalking astronauts grabbed a stranded communications satellite in for repair. It also flew the first repair mission to the Hubble Space Telescope to fix a faulty mirror. But most of its flights ferried cargo and equipment to the International Space Station, which is near completion.

Under White House orders to explore beyond low-Earth orbit, NASA is hitching rides on Russian rockets to the orbiting laboratory until private companies can provide regular service.

Endeavour is the second of three remaining shuttles to head to its retirement home. In April, Discovery arrived at the Smithsonian Institution's hangar in Virginia. Atlantis, which closed out the shuttle program, will stay in Florida where it will be towed a short distance to the Kennedy Space Center's visitor center in the fall.

Endeavour will remain at an airport hangar for several weeks as crews ready the shuttle for its own road trip. Unlike Atlantis, it will creep through city streets to the California Science Center near downtown.

Some 400 trees will be cleared along the 12-mile route to make room, a move that has riled some residents in affected neighborhoods. Museum officials have pledged to replant double the number of chopped trees.

"As parents, we have to understand better that our responsibilities to our children are not only of a social, economical, or educational nature, but that our own biological status can contribute to the fate of our children, and this effect can be long-lasting," said Mihai Niculescu, M.D., Ph.D., study author from Nutrition Research Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in Chapel Hill, N.C. "My hope is that, along with many other scientists, we will reveal this tight biological relationship between us as parents, and our children, and how we can improve the lives of our children using our own biological machinery."

To make this discovery, Niculescu and colleagues split mouse females into two groups before gestation, and fed them either a control diet, or a diet deficient in alpha-linolenic acid or ALA. This was achieved by replacing the type of fats in the diet, while keeping the number of calories the same. The females were bred with mouse males kept on a control diet. Immediately after the moms delivered the pups, each of these two initial groups were further split in two, so that each half of the initial groups received a flaxseed oil supplemented diet (rich in ALA), while the other halves from each group remained on the same diet.

Researchers used blood and liver to look at polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels and the DNA methylation of a gene called Fads2, which regulates PUFA metabolism. They found that in both the moms and pups, flaxseed oil induced a change in this chemical modification in the Fads2 gene. Flaxseed oil supplementation increased the methylation of this gene, which, in turn, decreased the activation of the gene in pups. However, flaxseed oil was not the only factor with impact upon Fads2 methylation in pups. Results demonstrated that regardless of the flaxseed oil intake, there was a correlation between the methylation of this gene in moms and in their pups, which suggested that pups also inherit this methylation from their moms. The pups' ability to transform PUFAs in their own livers was influenced by both the mother's dietary intake, and also by maternal Fads2 methylation status.

"New York City may be laughed at by some for banning large, sugary sodas and for encouraging a healthy diet," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, "This report shows that future generations might not find that funny at all. This report adds to the large body of evidence that an inappropriate diet can produce changes in the function of our DNA and the DNA of our children -- a process called epigenetics. As we begin understand the effects of diet on epigenetics, New York may go from being considered a funny 'nanny-state' to becoming appreciated as a public health visionary."
